Frequently Asked Questions
- Que: What does a keg coupler actually do? Ans: The coupler is the heart of a draft system. When you press and twist it onto the keg valve, the internal probe opens the keg, allowing pressurized CO₂ to push beer up through the body and out through the beer line to your faucet. Without the coupler, there is no connection between the keg, gas, and tap.
- Que: Do all beer brands use the same coupler? Ans: No — different beer brands and countries use different keg valve systems including D, S, A, G, and M Systems. Each system requires a specific coupler to fit correctly. Choosing the wrong coupler means it will not connect to your keg. BarObjects carries keg couplers for all major systems so you can always find the right coupler for your beer.
- Que: How do I tap a keg with the Coupler? Ans: This tapping process applies to the American D System, European S System, and U System keg couplers. Ensure the coupler handle is in the upright OFF position before starting. Align the two coupler lugs with the corresponding openings in the keg valve and turn clockwise to engage into position. Once locked, press the handle downward to the ON position to allow gas to enter the keg and beer to flow out.
- Que: What is the pressure relief valve and why does it matter? Ans: A pressure relief valve (PRV) is a built-in safety feature on a keg coupler that automatically releases excess pressure if it builds too high in your draft system. If your CO₂ regulator malfunctions or pressure exceeds the safe limit, the PRV vents automatically protecting both your equipment and preventing potential injury.
- Que: How do I clean Keg couplers? Ans: Disconnect the coupler from the keg and rinse all beer-contact surfaces with warm water. Use an approved beer line cleaning solution to remove beer residue, yeast, and bacteria buildup. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry before reassembly. Regular cleaning maintains beer quality and extends the life of the coupler.
- Que: When should I replace the O-rings and seals? Ans: Check seals and O-rings every 3–6 months, or immediately if you notice beer or gas leaking around the coupler body. All replacement parts including the probe seal washer, body O-rings, and bottom seal washer are available individually at BarObjects. Keeping spare seals on hand ensures no downtime during a busy service.
- Que: What should I do if my coupler is leaking gas or beer? Ans: A leak usually points to a worn O-ring, a damaged probe seal washer, or a loose hose connection. First check that all hose barbs are properly clamped. Then inspect the body O-rings and the probe seal washer — these are the most common failure points. Both parts are inexpensive and can be replaced in minutes using the replacement parts listed on the product page.
